The suite
One room, four pieces of kit, built for contrast therapy — the hot-cold-hot cycle that athletes have used for decades and that the rest of us are just starting to realise.
A traditional Finnish sauna with a smart heater and tiered benches. Dry, hot, and quiet. Perfect for your relaxation and recovery.
Chilled and filtered, held at plunge temperature all day. Two tubs means no waiting for your turn when the sauna empties out.
A commercial-grade hot tub for the slower end of the session. A place to chat and socialise when you've had enough of the sauna and plunges.
Rinse-off shower and a private changing area. Somewhere dry to leave your kit. Bring your own towels.
How it works
No reception, no waiting around. The suite runs itself so you can drop in around training, work or the school run.
Pick a time on your phone. Sessions run every hour, seven days a week, from dawn till dusk.
Your booking tells the sauna you’re coming. It's at temperature by the minute you arrive. No waiting, no wasted energy.
You will be issued a code for the gate that works for your entire booking. No hassle and private. Just for you and an exclusive few.
Rinse off, change, and head out. The water treatment and turnaround happen on their own between sessions.
The booking system
Pick your session, pick a time, answer a short health check, pay. Sixty seconds on your phone and the sauna starts heating for you.
Why contrast
Fifteen minutes in the sauna, two in the plunge, and back again. It's a simple loop, performed in Scandinavia for centuries, we’re only now realising its benefits.
The evidence
Saunas aren't a wellness fad in Finland, they're plumbing. There are around 3.3 million of them for 5.5 million people, more saunas than cars, and roughly nine in ten Finns use one every week. UNESCO put Finnish sauna culture on its heritage list in 2020. That national habit is why the best long-term data on heat exposure comes from Finland, where researchers could follow ordinary people doing this for decades.
Lower risk among men using a sauna 4–7 times a week, compared with once a week.
JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015
Lower risk of dying from any cause over the same 20-year follow-up.
JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015
Lower risk of a dementia diagnosis; 65% lower for Alzheimer's specifically.
Age and Ageing, 2017
Lower risk of developing hypertension among men with normal blood pressure at the start.
American Journal of Hypertension, 2017
Nearly all of them trace back to one remarkable piece of work: the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study, which followed 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men for an average of more than twenty years and recorded how often they used a sauna.
The striking part is the dose response. Men going 2–3 times a week saw a meaningful reduction in risk; men going 4–7 times a week saw roughly double it. That pattern is more exposure, more benefit.
The proposed mechanism is unglamorous and plausible. A hot sauna pushes your heart rate to 120–150 beats per minute, similar to moderate exercise, while blood vessels dilate and blood pressure falls afterwards. Do that several times a week for twenty years and it starts to look like training.
Cold immersion has a smaller and more mixed evidence base than heat. What it reliably does is reduce muscle soreness after hard sessions, and produce a sharp rise in noradrenaline, the mechanism behind the alertness and mood lift people describe.
What it doesn't do is help everything. A systematic review pooling the trials found that cold immersion straight after resistance training measurably blunts strength and muscle growth over time. Endurance adaptations aren't affected.
So the practical advice: if you've just lifted heavy and you're chasing size or strength, leave a few hours before you plunge, or just sit in the sauna. After conditioning, a race, or a hard week, plunge away.

Questions
We're in the build phase now. Join the founding list and you'll be the first to know the date, we'll email you as soon as it's fixed.
No. The suite is open to anyone. Members of Esprit De Corps Crossfit get their own rate, but you can book a drop-in or take a recovery membership without ever setting foot in Esprit De Corps Crossfit.
Swimwear, a towel and flip-flops. That's it. Come changed if you can, only because it makes your hour go further.
The first thirty seconds are genuinely unpleasant. Start with a shorter dip — twenty or thirty seconds is a real session at first — build from there. Nobody's judging!
Yes, and that's the part we've spent the most time on. Water quality is managed by automated dosing and filtration with a scheduled testing and record-keeping regime; there's an emergency call point in the suite, clear signage, and remote monitoring on temperatures. You'll also complete a short health check when you first book. During opening hours of Esprit De Corps next door, there will always be a friendly coach on site for any extra questions!
Heat and cold both put load on your heart. If you're pregnant, have a heart condition, high or low blood pressure, epilepsy, or you're recovering from surgery or illness, please speak to your GP before booking. Never use the suite after drinking. We'll ask you to confirm all of this when you book.
Yes — private hire is £75 for 60 minutes for up to six people. Good for a birthday, a team, or a Sunday morning with people you actually like. Additional time can be booked on top at a discount rate.
Sessions are capped at six people so the sauna never feels crowded and you're not queuing for a plunge. Book privately if you'd rather have it entirely to yourself.
Forty founding places at £45 a month, locked in for as long as you stay. Takes twenty seconds and costs nothing today.
